The X20XC0201 is an embedded control module produced by B&R Automation as part of the X20 Fieldbus Input Output Modules series. Installed on an X20 backplane, it serves as a local coordinator that preprocesses digital and analog channels before results are forwarded to the central PLC. By hosting the control functions directly on the carrier, the unit eliminates the need for an additional CPU slot in compact cabinets, reduces fieldbus traffic, and shortens reaction times for conveyors, packaging lines, and other machines that require distributed, tightly synchronized I/O.
The module occupies only 62.5 mm of rail space, allowing dense layouts in electrical enclosures that accept both horizontal and vertical mounting orientations. It draws a modest 2 W from the system power bus, so heat dissipation remains low. With an instruction cycle of 0.8 µs, the unit can execute arithmetic and logic operations at high frequency while hardware continues to process I/O in the background. Application variables are stored in 100 kB of battery-free SRAM, which provides fast access for real-time tasks. The electronics are housed in an IP20 rated case, so the device must be operated inside a protected control cabinet. Base board variants provide one RS232 port or an additional CAN channel, and carrier boards can expose one or two fieldbus slots to match network requirements.

Program images reside in 1 MB FlashPROM, so updates are retained through power cycles without a backup battery. Configuration data that must survive brownouts is stored in 2.75 kB of FRAM memory, while long-term diagnostics benefit from a real-time clock with 1 s resolution. The module runs on an Embedded µP 16 architecture, providing deterministic 16-bit processing for motion, safety, or sequencing subroutines. The unit does not include an integrated temperature sensor.
