The X20SRT806 safety I/O module is manufactured by B & R Automation for the X20 Fieldbus Input/Output Modules series. It mounts on a standard X20 backplane and exchanges safe process data with the controller over the fieldbus. The module combines configurable inputs, outputs, and test-pulse channels so that emergency stops, guard doors, and muting sensors can be wired directly on the machine frame. Integrated line monitoring and electronic short-circuit detection provide high diagnostic coverage in distributed fail-safe architectures.
Eight safe inputs comply with Type A sensing rules, and the model provides 8 individually monitored channels that accept 24 V signals from contact or semiconductor devices. On the output side, the module provides 6 safety switches that satisfy Type B2 criteria for actuating contactors or valve coils. A safety cycle time of 150 µs sets the maximum interval between input sampling and output updates, allowing the controller to stop motion within the limits established by the risk assessment. The module also has four pulse-test channels that monitor the input lines for cross-circuits. These channels help detect wiring faults that could otherwise prevent a connected safety device from reporting a hazardous condition.
The safe outputs switch the nominal load voltage at 24 V DC, and each channel can source up to 0.2 A without derating. When an off-state request is issued, the output signal switching device pair reaches a high-impedance state in <10 µs, limiting residual energy on the field lines. For positioning applications that use drive-based motion, the module also offers a test-pulse generator that delivers 24 VDC reference edges for sensor diagnostics while leaving the functional signal unaffected. Electronic short-circuit detection monitors the output paths and supports prompt fault recognition. The combination of safe input processing, controlled output switching, and line monitoring allows the module to support distributed machine safety functions without requiring separate signal-conditioning hardware.
