The X20SP1130 safety output module is produced by B&R Automation for the X20 Fieldbus Input Output Modules series. It serves as a safety power stage that disconnects or enables 24 VDC loads in response to a certified safety logic controller. In an automation rack, it occupies one X20 slot and provides a short-circuit-protected high-side switch so machines can fulfill stop functions without adding discrete relays. This arrangement keeps safety switching inside the distributed I/O station rather than requiring a separate external interface. Because it is fieldbus-based, the module shares backplane power and signaling with neighboring I/O slices.
The module has a bus power draw of 0.2 W, while it returns 0 W to the backplane, so downstream loads must be powered externally. Its internal monitoring electronics consume 4.5 W, and the integrated power transistors can deliver up to 240 W of internal I/O power to connected actuators. A shared system current limit applies to the module group, yet the dedicated safety channel can source 10 A continuously without derating. The safe cutoff path is integrated, eliminating the need for external contactors and reducing reaction time during fault conditions. OSSD signaling is not supported, so the channel operates strictly as a high-current switching output.
The safety channel uses output type B1, which means the high-side MOSFET is monitored for short circuits and tested at every shutoff. It delivers a nominal control voltage of 24 VDC and has a safe output count of 1, which suits applications that need an individual emergency stop valve or contactor coil. When several X20 safety modules share a supply, the group current limit should be observed to avoid exceeding the backplane fuse capacity. By integrating diagnostics into the fieldbus telegrams, the host controller can detect overloads, overtemperature, or wire break conditions without additional sensing hardware.
