The X20SM1436 module is produced by B&R Automation for the X20 Fieldbus Input Output Modules series. It is a plug-in stepper motor driver that couples directly to the system backplane and powers a 2-phase bipolar stepper so motion axes can be added beside standard I/O slices. By translating fieldbus commands into pulse sequences, the unit positions small actuators for packaging, labeling, and pick-and-place stations. Its four local digital inputs also allow limit switches or sensors to share the same carrier, which helps keep related motion and sensing functions in one module group.
The internal controller synthesizes step patterns at a rate of 38.4 kHz, and every edge is counted by a 16-bit counter to keep track of absolute position. For feedback, it accepts 24 V asymmetrical encoder signals, evaluates them with 4× decoding, and tolerates frequencies up to 50 kHz. Microstepping is selectable up to 256 microsteps/step, giving smoother rotation at low speeds and more refined motion during positioning moves. The power stage delivers a nominal winding current of 3 A, yet it can supply 3.5 A for 2 s to overcome friction during acceleration. Supplying the module requires 24 VDC, and the input circuit is sink type with a typical 18.2 kΩ resistance shared by the four digital inputs. This combination lets the module drive a stepper motor and process basic local input signals without requiring a separate motion slice for the same axis.
A 100 µF DC-bus capacitor smooths regenerated energy during rapid load changes. The housing carries a protection rating of IP20, so the module is intended for cabinet installation where finger contact with internal parts is limited. Protection on the motion and sensing supply is provided by a 10 A slow-blow fuse that coordinates with upstream breakers. This layout suits control cabinets where compact motion hardware is installed beside other X20 modules on the same backplane.
