The X20SM1426 servo module from B&R Automation is part of the X20 Fieldbus Input Output Modules series. It is a single-axis motion slice that combines motor power switching, encoder feedback, and digital sensing in one housing for distributed machine control. Within an X20 backplane, the module drives small DC or stepper motors while sending incremental position data to the central PLC. By integrating power and feedback on the same slice, it reduces wiring in conveyor sections, pick-and-place heads, and other compact automation assemblies. This arrangement keeps axis electronics close to the motor and sensing points, which is useful when installation space is limited.
During continuous operation, the output stage delivers 1 A, which is the sustained current available to the connected motor without thermal derating. The module has 4 on-board digital inputs, and each one accepts control signals at 24 VDC, allowing proximity sensors or limit switches to share the backplane supply. Those inputs can supervise a home switch, an end-of-travel limit, and two auxiliary signals on the same axis. The feedback interface processes pulses from an incremental encoder, enabling closed-loop speed or position regulation and allowing the controller to monitor actual movement directly. A dedicated screw terminal marked MOT provides 1 motor connection channel, keeping phase wiring separate from I/O conductors.
For short accelerations, the driver sources up to 1.2 A, which gives the axis extra current during brief inertia spikes without triggering a fault. The incoming power rail can fluctuate within -15% / +20%, maintaining reliable logic and output behavior over normal plant voltage drops or boosts. This tolerance applies to the nominal supply voltage that reaches the electronics through the X20 bus connector. The extra current margin is useful during starts and brief reversals, when load inertia can raise demand above the continuous level.
