The X20SLX811 safe digital input module is produced by B&R Automation and belongs to the X20 Fieldbus Input Output Modules series. As a component for machine-level safety, the unit receives safety-related sensor signals and allows a controller to monitor emergency stops, door switches, or light curtains through a safety network. By fitting on the X20 backplane, the module brings safety-rated inputs into distributed I/O stations without expanding cabinet depth, making it suitable for compact industrial automation cells where safety functions must coexist with standard control signals.
It occupies a single-width slot, so adjacent modules remain accessible for wiring. The output stage can generate test pulses at 24 VDC, and its four diagnostic pulse outputs allow the controller to detect wiring faults such as short circuits or cross-connections. The module provides eight safe digital inputs for connecting safety-related sensors without requiring a separate input unit. Each input has a Type A classification, making the channels suitable for contacts or compatible electronic sensors. Internal circuitry timestamps each event to maintain deterministic reaction times when multiple safety messages share the same fieldbus cycle.
Up to 10 safe devices can be grouped behind one remote station, a capacity recorded as the safenode limit. The safemotion feature can supervise four coordinated motion elements, reducing the need for the main CPU to perform local speed or position checks. Safety telegrams are exchanged through openSAFETY, which provides end-to-end cyclic redundancy check protection without dedicated safety cabling. The module combines input processing, diagnostics, and network communication in the compact X20 housing. Its distributed architecture supports machine safety applications designed according to EN ISO 13849 or IEC 62061 requirements.
