Product Description:
The X20SLX210 is a safety-oriented expansion unit produced by B & R Automation for the X20 Fieldbus Input Output Modules series. It combines safe input sensing and basic safety logic in a compact rail-mounted housing. Within an automation cell, the device serves as a localized safety controller that exchanges certified data over the backplane and fieldbus, allowing machinery builders to integrate emergency stops, guard monitoring, and motion supervision without a standalone safety PLC.
Its primary control role is a Safety Controller, meaning the onboard processor evaluates input patterns against predefined safety functions and switches outputs only when risk is mitigated. The hardware is classified as a Safe Digital Input Module; therefore, it directly records safety-related sensor signals instead of relying on separate terminal blocks. Two galvanically isolated channels provide 2 safe inputs, and each channel follows the Type A specification so it can monitor dry contacts or electronic sensors with internal test pulses. For distributed architectures, status and diagnostic bits are transferred through the openSAFETY protocol, ensuring category-4 data integrity across mixed vendors and various real-time Ethernet backbones.
Beyond input handling, the module drives actuators through 2 pulse outputs that modulate 24-volt lines for muting lamps, enable relays, or pulse-coded valve position feedback. The switching energy remains within a nominal 24 VDC envelope, simplifying common power distribution in safety cabinets. Integrated motion oversight covers 4 safety motion axes, letting the controller supervise encoder data and intervene with STO or SS1 commands without separate axis cards. The module can administer up to 10 safe nodes on a single branch, which supports decentralized protection zones across a distributed safety network.
