The X20SL8011 is a safety controller module produced by B&R Automation for the X20 Fieldbus Input Output Modules series. Installed on X20 backplanes, it provides logic processing for distributed safety I/O and communicates with standard control CPUs over the POWERLINK network. Within an automation cell, it supervises safety-related inputs and outputs so machinery can move to a predefined safe state when a fault is detected, making it a central part of integrated machine safety.
Thermal management is simplified because the unit uses fanless cooling, and the housing carries an IP20 degree of protection for cabinet-mounted environments. Its enclosure measures 87.5 +0.2 mm in width, 75 mm in depth, and 99 mm in height, allowing dense rack layouts without requiring excessive panel space. Average power draw is only 5.1 W, which helps limit cabinet heat rise during continuous operation. A task cycle of 1 ms allows rapid evaluation of safety logic, while the backplane supports deterministic data exchange at a network transfer rate of 100 Mbit/s. Via the POWERLINK interface, the module can be installed up to 100 m from the hub device without repeaters while maintaining full bandwidth on shielded twisted-pair cable.
The fieldbus layer refreshes safe process data every 20 ms, and the controller architecture is certified to the performance level of PL e. It also meets Safety Category Cat. 4 and system integrity level SIL 3, which supports use in applications that require very high stop reliability. One master can coordinate up to 100 safety nodes, and peer communication is available for as many as 10 controllers. This arrangement supports distributed emergency-stop buttons, light curtains, and safe drives across large machines while keeping all connected devices on common timing constraints.
