Product Description:
B & R Automation produces the X20SL8010 module as part of its X20 Fieldbus Input Output Modules series. The hardware serves as a safety link device that connects decentralized safe I/O stations to a central controller through the POWERLINK real-time Ethernet protocol. By acting as a gateway for safety-critical data, the module helps support functional safety requirements while reducing cabinet space and field wiring. It installs on the X20 backplane and draws its supply from the system power bus.
The communication layer can process a shortest task loop of 1 ms, so status bits from field sensors can be evaluated within that time. In larger networks, the bus still maintains a maximum cycle of 20 ms, which provides a clear upper limit for update latency. Data moves over a full-duplex line speed of 100 Mbit/s by way of the module’s internal two-port hub with shielded RJ45 sockets, and this arrangement also supports line topology without external switches. Safety power is supplied at 24 VDC -15% / +20%, and the electronics draw only 5.1 W from that rail, which helps keep power demand low in compact systems. The interface can manage up to 20 safety nodes, the housing is rated IP20, continuous service is permitted from 0 °C to 55 °C, and the 87.5 mm width fits standard X20 rail segments.
The installation distance between the module and the last device on the segment can reach 100 m, allowing cabinets to be placed away from moving machinery without affecting telegram timing. The device is designed for a total mission time of 20 years and attains the machinery standard category corresponding to PL e. This rating applies to both logical data handling and the integrated line diagnostics functions. When snapped onto a backplane, the unit adds only 290 g to the assembly, which helps keep the load low in small enclosures.
