Product Description:
The X20SL8000 is a safety-oriented fieldbus coupler manufactured by B & R Automation as part of the X20 Fieldbus Input Output Modules series. Serving as the network interface for distributed I/O segments, this unit links safe and standard remote modules to a central controller over an industrial Ethernet backbone. By hosting POWERLINK safety nodes and forwarding deterministic traffic, the module supports machine safety circuits without separate wiring and fits a compact rail-mounted form factor in automated production equipment. This arrangement allows safe and standard signals to move through the same distributed I/O structure while remaining centrally coordinated by the controller.
The coupler operates from a nominal supply of 24 VDC, so cabinet power systems based on extra-low voltage can feed it directly. Its network layer uses the open-standard POWERLINK protocol and transmits cyclic data at up to 100 Mbit/s through two shielded RJ45 sockets, allowing line or ring topology without external switches. Application tasks can be triggered at a minimum execution interval of 1 ms, enabling fast reaction times for emergency-stop chains. An enclosure rating of IP20 means the electronics must be installed inside a protected control cabinet for typical indoor production floors.
Because the design is fanless, the 75 mm-deep housing relies on convection cooling, which eliminates moving parts and prevents dust from being pulled through the circuitry. The electronics draw only 5.1 W, limiting heat dissipation and simplifying airflow calculations around adjacent modules. For safety motion applications, the unit guarantees fieldbus updates within 20 ms and supervises up to 20 integrated safety nodes without performance loss. Mechanical loading on the DIN rail remains low because the module weighs just 290 g and has a width of 87.5 mm with a +0.2 mm tolerance, allowing close placement next to standard X20 slices.
