Product Description:
The X20SI9100 is a safety-rated input module produced by B&R Automation as part of the X20 Fieldbus Input Output Modules series. Designed for distributed machine control architectures, the unit provides safety-compliant signal acquisition so that critical field devices can be monitored by a central PLC or motion controller. By combining discrete safe inputs with pulse test outputs, the module helps emergency stops, light curtains, and other shutdown circuits operate within the functional safety requirements used in industrial automation. It is suited for applications where the controller must verify the state of protective devices before hazardous motion is enabled. Because the module is installed in a distributed I/O system, safety signals can be collected close to the machine area where they originate, which helps keep field wiring organized.
The module’s power draw on the backplane is only 0.40 W, while an additional 1.60 W is consumed by its internal circuitry that conditions and evaluates each channel. All 20 terminals are configured for a Safe Digital Input role, giving the unit a high channel density for devices that must be verified before motion can start. Each channel follows the requirements for safety input Type A, which sets the required fault-detection measures and diagnostic coverage. With a total of 20 individually monitored inputs, the module can supervise multiple guarding devices without requiring additional hardware slots. This arrangement is useful when several door switches, reset circuits, or protective sensors must be observed at the same time by the safety controller.
To test the field wiring and connected sensors, the unit provides 4 short-circuit-monitored pulse outputs that toggle at a logic level of 24 VDC. These pulses are evaluated by the inputs to confirm line integrity during every machine cycle. Because the outputs are purely diagnostic, the specification lists a sensor and actuator supply of 0.00 W, so external devices remain unaffected by the internal test sequence. The diagnostic pulses help the controller distinguish valid switching states from wiring faults such as shorts or cross-connections. This approach, used in B&R Automation safety modules, supports high diagnostic coverage with minimal wiring and without adding auxiliary test generators.
