The X20RT8001 is an I/O slice manufactured by B&R Automation for the X20 Fieldbus Input Output Modules series. It is intended for decentralized control panels where incremental encoder feedback and standard digital inputs must coexist on a single backplane. By translating 24 V field-level signals into backplane data, the module lets a controller capture position information and monitor switching events, supporting deterministic motion sequences in industrial automation cells.
The module provides 4 configurable I/O channels, each selectable as a digital input or as part of the incremental encoder interface. When the lines act as discrete inputs, they accept voltages above 15 VDC and ignore levels below 5 VDC. With a sink input circuit, field sensors reference the system common, and the nominal input voltage is 24 VDC. A built-in 18.16 kΩ input resistance restricts current and helps protect upstream electronics. For motion feedback, the same lines can sample encoder edges at an input frequency of 333 kHz, while the internal supply can deliver up to 600 mA to power the transducer. A push-pull output driver ensures that state changes propagate cleanly to the controller across the X20 bus.
Position increments accumulate in a 32-bit counter, permitting more than four billion counts before rollover. Edge resolution is multiplied by 4× quadrature evaluation, which processes both channels on rising and falling transitions. A selectable 3 µs hardware filter removes contact bounce and high-frequency noise before the logic evaluates an event. One encoder input uses a 24 V asymmetrical signal and shares the four lines already described, which helps reduce wiring. The housing carries an IP20 rating, so installation is limited to closed electrical enclosures where direct water exposure is not expected.
