The X20MM4456 belongs to the X20 Fieldbus Input Output Modules series produced by B&R Automation. It is an I/O and motion module that combines digital signal acquisition with motor-side pulse-width modulation, allowing a controller to read discrete sensors and drive compact DC actuators from the same module. In distributed machine architectures, the module reduces cabinet wiring by placing digital inputs, encoder feedback, and motor bridges on the fieldbus rail near the connected load. This arrangement also reduces the distance that sensor and actuator wiring must travel through the machine.
The module accepts a digital input voltage of 24 VDC, matching the standard control level used by proximity switches and photoelectric sensors without requiring level converters. Its input block has a 4 × 4 channel arrangement, consisting of four groups with four channels in each group. A controller can sample these channels individually or process them together as a 16-bit word. For position verification, the unit supports an incremental encoder mode, allowing quadrature signals to be time-stamped inside the module instead of being routed back to the PLC. The drive circuitry supports a continuous load of 6 A, and current above this level may cause thermal derating to limit the duty cycle. The module also tolerates short transients of up to 10 A, providing additional current for brief torque surges during motor starting or braking.
The module provides four PWM bridges for controlling independent motor outputs in unipolar or bipolar drive configurations. The power bus accepts voltages as high as 48 VDC, allowing the module to operate compatible 24-volt or 36-volt motors without changes to the installed hardware. The minimum permitted power-bus voltage is 24 VDC. A supply variation of ±25% is permitted, helping the module continue operating when voltage changes occur because of long cable runs or varying motor loads. Mechanical integration follows the X20 module format, allowing the unit to mount directly on the fieldbus rail beside related input, output, and control modules. Diagnostic information and parameter mapping are available through the network for centralized monitoring and control.
