The X20IF2181-2 is a communication accessory from B&R Automation in the X20 Fieldbus Input Output Modules series. As an interface module, it installs on the X20 I/O backplane and routes real-time network traffic between industrial controllers and distributed I/O stations. By separating POWERLINK segments, it helps keep deterministic Ethernet communication organized in modular automation lines. When network paths are divided across machine sections, the module supports clearer fault isolation and more stable cycle timing during normal operation.
The module functions as a Link Selector, so it can choose the active branch and isolate a failed segment without requiring an external selector device. It communicates through POWERLINK, which uses scheduled data exchange to support synchronized control traffic across connected nodes. Two integrated Ethernet jacks provide 2 RJ45 ports, allowing ring or line wiring in compact cabinets. The housing carries an IP20 rating, so it is intended for protected enclosure installation rather than direct exposure to dust or washdown areas. It also has an overvoltage category II rating, indicating suitability for circuits supplied from local distribution.
The module does not support live replacement, so no hot-swap capability means power should be removed before the unit is exchanged. For fault tolerance, it supports cable redundancy, allowing communication to continue over the remaining path if one cable is interrupted. Mechanical durability includes resistance to 15 g shock loads and 1 g of continuous vibration, which suits installation on machinery with moderate motion or repetitive impact. This operating behavior is useful on packaging equipment, conveyor systems, and process skids where stable network availability is required across multiple machine sections.
