The X20IF10D3-1 is an Ethernet communication module produced by B&R Automation for the X20 Fieldbus Input Output Modules series. Installed next to local I/O slices, it presents the station to an external PLC or SCADA system as an EtherNet/IP slave, allowing process variables to pass deterministically over standard copper cabling. By separating the fieldbus link from control logic, the unit simplifies expansion of existing X20 nodes and supports decentralized architectures in packaging, material handling, and machine tool cells. This arrangement lets a remote I/O station exchange command, status, and diagnostic data with higher-level controls while leaving the local slice structure unchanged.
At the electrical layer, the interface follows the 10BASE-T/100BASE-TX standard, so it can join either 10 Mbit/s or 100 Mbit/s segments without manual setting. Two shielded RJ45 sockets are wired through an internal switch, creating a convenient line topology for linking adjacent devices. Auto-MDI/MDIX removes the need for crossover cables, and autonegotiation selects speed and full- or half-duplex operation automatically. A dedicated netX100 network controller handles the network data and exposes the module to the host as an EtherNet/IP adapter. The front-facing ports also keep patch leads easy to access in compact control cabinets.
The data channel moves up to 504 bytes of cyclic input and output per scan, which is enough bandwidth for dozens of process points. A copper segment length of 100 m matches standard Ethernet practice, letting the module sit at common shop-floor distances from the switch cabinet. During operation, it dissipates only 2 W, which helps limit internal heating on densely packed rails, and the enclosure carries an IP20 rating for use in protected panels. Device parameters are stored through a DTM-based configuration method, and the built-in switch can pass traffic to downstream devices without additional hardware.
