Product Description:
B&R Automation's X20IF1030 communication module belongs to the X20 Fieldbus Input Output Modules series. It is an interface component that provides serial connectivity between higher-level controllers and distributed I/O nodes. Within industrial automation, the module inserts into an X20 backplane and translates field device data into the system bus, enabling deterministic exchange of status bits, analog values, or diagnostics across long machine segments.
The communication layer uses 1x RS485/RS422, which allows either half-duplex or full-duplex signaling depending on the network topology. All user conductors terminate at a 9-pin female DSUB, and its pin assignments follow standard serial wiring. Inside the device, a FIFO sized at 16 bytes per direction decouples processor cycles from line traffic so bursts of telegrams are handled without overrun. With proper termination, the line can span 1200 m before signal margins erode. Once active, an asynchronous data stream up to 115.2 kbit/s is sustained, covering most sensor and actuator refresh times used in machine control. The plastic housing carries an IP20 rating, making the card suitable for clean, closed cabinets where finger protection, not liquid sealing, is required.
The module draws only 0.42 W, so it adds minimal thermal load even when several units share the same rail. Cable termination occurs through an External T-connector, allowing quick insertion of stubs without disturbing adjacent nodes and helping maintain characteristic impedance. At the heart of the interface is a 16C550-compatible UART controller; this device provides programmable baud selection and buffered transmit and receive registers, enabling low CPU overhead even on legacy PLCs. The enclosure supports horizontal or vertical mounting orientation, so the carrier can be rotated to suit airflow or space constraints while maintaining the prescribed derating curves.
