The X20hb8884 is a compact link selector module produced by B & R Automation for the X20 Fieldbus Input Output Modules series. The device is inserted into the remote I/O rail to direct Ethernet-based traffic between controller segments, enabling redundant topologies and daisy-chain extensions without external switches. By isolating segments at the physical layer, it preserves deterministic communication during time-critical machine sequences and reduces field wiring. The module is classified as open equipment, so it requires a surrounding cabinet to provide mechanical protection and the controlled conditions needed in industrial automation systems.
Signal interfaces are limited to 2 network channels, and each channel uses an RJ45 jack on the front face for convenient patch-cord access. The compact link selector includes logic that automatically chooses the active path when one line is interrupted, eliminating the need for manual intervention. The lower operating temperature is -25 °C during cold-start conditions. The upper operating temperature is 60 °C when the module is mounted horizontally, allowing use across typical plant conditions. Twelve-position terminal blocks accommodate auxiliary wiring and I/O backplane contacts. Because the unit is intended for installation inside an enclosed control cabinet, airflow and protective earth bonding must be provided by the host panel rather than by the module itself.
The electronics support operation at altitudes up to 2000 m. They remain functional at a maximum relative humidity of 95% when the surrounding air is non-condensing. Supply conductors connect to a keyed terminal block that accepts 24 VDC, helping prevent accidental connection to a higher-voltage source. In nonventilated enclosures, the required cabinet clearances must be maintained so heat can dissipate around the module. Proper spacing also helps preserve the electrical isolation distances needed by the network interfaces and backplane contacts. Cabinet conditions should remain within the stated temperature and humidity limits during operation, including periods when nearby equipment adds heat to the enclosure. The front-facing network jacks should remain accessible so cables can be routed without sharp bends or strain at the connectors.
