B&R Automation's X20HB8880 belongs to the X20 Fieldbus Input Output Modules series and functions as a hub base module for Ethernet distribution inside modular control systems. Installed at the base of an I/O slice, the device forms the mechanical and electrical backbone that lets neighboring X20 modules share supply voltage and data over a common bus. In an automation cell, the module consolidates twisted-pair links, enabling controllers, sensors, and drives to communicate over standard IEEE 802.3 wiring without separate rack-mounted switches. Because it serves as the base of the assembly, adjacent modules can be added in a compact line without separate network housings at each connection point.
The communication interface follows the 100BASE-TX physical layer and exposes 2 shielded RJ45 sockets on the front panel; each port negotiates a 100 Mbit/s data rate through autonegotiation. Automatic MDI/MDI-X crossover eliminates dedicated uplink cables, and half-duplex operation is supported while full-duplex operation is disabled to keep collision handling predictable in real-time systems. Galvanic isolation is provided between the power supply and the Ethernet circuitry, and the electronics draw only 2 W from the backplane. The housing carries an IP20 rating, making the module suitable for mounting in enclosed cabinets where finger-safe protection is sufficient.
The base offers 2 expansion slots that accept additional hub or power modules, letting a single station grow as application needs change. When fully equipped, it can supply up to 6 Ethernet branch ports, each sustaining a copper segment length of 100 m between nodes. The unit can be installed horizontally or vertically on the DIN rail without derating, and reliable operation is specified up to 2000 m above sea level. Front-facing connections and modular expansion help keep branch routing organized within the same station.
