The X20HB28G0 is an I/O hub module engineered by B&R Automation for the X20 Fieldbus Input Output Modules series. It serves as an in-rack Ethernet junction that routes deterministic traffic between distributed sensors, actuators, and the main controller without external switches. By concentrating fieldbus branching in a 24 mm slice, the unit reduces cabinet wiring and preserves installation space in automated assembly lines and machine tools. Because the hub function is integrated into the module, branch connections can be placed close to the controlled equipment instead of requiring a separate network device elsewhere in the cabinet. This arrangement helps keep cable runs organized and supports cleaner panel layouts in compact control systems.
On the network side, the module uses 2x RJ45, shielded connectors. Both ports follow the IEEE 802.3 physical layer 100BASE-TX and exchange data at a sustained line speed of 100 Mbit/s. Automatic crossover correction is available through Auto-MDI/MDIX, while autonegotiation aligns duplex mode with attached devices. Each segment can extend up to 100 m, allowing flexible placement of remote I/O stations along the machine frame or conveyor. Shielding on the ports helps reduce susceptibility to electrical noise from nearby drives, contactors, and motor cables. These communications features allow the use of standard CAT-5e cabling while maintaining the timing consistency required for machine data exchange.
The module draws a maximum of 1.01 W from the X20 backplane and operates in a fanless IP20 housing. Thermal limits are 0 to 55 °C when mounted horizontally and 0 to 50 °C in vertical orientation, and above 2000 m elevation the allowed range decreases by 0.5 °C per 100 m. Long-term storage is permitted from −25 to 70 °C. Internally, the device implements switching logic with a hub propagation delay of 1.1 µs, so telegram timing remains inside EtherCAT frame budgets even when both of its 2 EtherCAT junctions are active. Horizontal or vertical DIN-rail mounting is permitted, giving flexibility when aligning the module with enclosure airflow paths and service access. This also makes it easier to fit the hub beside neighboring slices without requiring a separate mounting arrangement.
