Product Description:
B&R Automation manufactures the X20HB2885 for its X20 Fieldbus Input Output Modules series. Classified as a hub expansion module, it sits beside standard I/O slices to add integrated Ethernet distribution within an automation node. In an X20 station, it extends network connectivity without taking on measurement or actuation tasks. Its role is to pass real-time traffic between the controller backplane and connected field devices, which helps eliminate the need for a separate external switch in compact installations. This arrangement keeps network distribution inside the same modular platform used for the rest of the node, which can simplify layouts when several Ethernet devices must be connected near the controller.
The front of the module carries two shielded RJ45 jacks, giving it two Ethernet ports for network connections. These ports are linked internally by a switch core that provides an active 2-port hub function, so network segments can be daisy-chained without changing the addressing scheme. B&R recommends CAT 5 SF/UTP cabling, and the housing has an IP20 rating for use inside protected control cabinets. The unit is intended for hub expansion rather than signal acquisition, so it does not perform input filtering or drive output channels. Basic vibration resistance is 1 g, while the higher 4 g vibration rating supports mounting on machinery that experiences more motion. Because the switching path is built into the slice, Ethernet devices can be connected in line without adding a separate network component beside the station.
Continuous service is permitted at elevations up to 2000 m and in ambient humidity up to 95% RH without condensation. The humidity limit applies only in noncondensing environments, so the module is intended for enclosed installations rather than direct exposure to moisture. A shock tolerance of 15 g helps the module withstand transport impacts and occasional in-service jolts, which is useful in equipment that sees intermittent mechanical stress. Overvoltage Category II indicates suitability for circuits supplied from local distribution, a condition commonly found in industrial control panels and similar automation enclosures.
