The X20HB2881 is a hub expansion module produced by B&R Automation within the X20 Fieldbus Input/Output Modules series. It functions as a branch point on an X2X real-time network, extending optical segments and concentrating traffic from distributed I/O nodes. In industrial automation, it reduces wiring complexity by serving as a central fiber gateway between controllers and remote terminal blocks, allowing deterministic data exchange across distributed machine sections while preserving the compact X20 form factor.
This module receives its logical slot assignment by position in the X2X line, a fixed addressing method that removes dip switches and simplifies setup. Physical connections are provided through two fiber connectors, enabling duplex optical links for upstream and downstream communication. The internal switch fabric offers two hub ports, so two remote sections can be connected without external splitters, and the housing is rated for 50 mating cycles before backplane contact wear may affect reliability. Mechanical installation is on a top-hat rail, allowing quick snap-in mounting beside controllers, power supplies, and other X20 modules. This arrangement is useful when a control cabinet must branch the network to separate machine zones without adding standalone optical hardware.
The module supports continuous operation at elevations from 0 to 2000 m without derating under typical cabinet conditions. In a horizontal mounting position, the permissible ambient range is -25 to 60 °C, while vertical installation limits the range to -25 to 50 °C because convection cooling is less effective. Signal transport uses fiber-optic media, which provides strong immunity to electromagnetic interference and supports long cable runs between machine sections without ground loops or crosstalk. That helps maintain stable communication in cabinets located near inverters, motors, and other electrical noise sources.
