The X20HB2880 is a hub expansion module produced by B&R Automation for the X20 Fieldbus Input Output Modules series. It inserts Ethernet branching capability directly into an I/O slice so controllers can extend a field network without external switches. Within an automation cabinet, the device supplies two network taps that let neighboring X20 nodes share deterministic communication over the same backplane bus. Its role is to maintain signal integrity while simplifying wiring in distributed machine architectures.
At the core of the unit is an integrated 2-port Ethernet hub that mirrors incoming frames to both outputs, eliminating latency from software routing. Each port is presented on shielded RJ45 connectors, and the assembly accepts CAT 5 SF/UTP cabling so the screened pairs preserve EMC performance in noisy enclosures. Mechanical attachment follows the EN 60715 TH35-7.5 rail profile, allowing quick clip-on mounting beside standard X20 slices. Network terminations are provided through 2 RJ45 ports, creating either a daisy-chain or star topology inside the cabinet. During operation, the housing withstands machine vibration up to 4 g, helping maintain continuous link stability on high-speed production equipment.
For system planning, the hub counts as 2 modules per controller, a limit that prevents excess current draw on the internal power bus. All I/O and supply leads are landed on the removable X20TB12 terminal block, and orientation is fixed by a keyed 24 VDC coding element that helps avoid wiring errors between power segments. The twelve spring terminals inside the block provide 12 pins for signal and protective earth conductors. Required ventilation is maintained by 35 mm of clearance above and below the housing and 10 mm on each side so thermal rise does not degrade long-term link quality.
