The X20HB1882 is a communication accessory manufactured by B&R Automation for the X20 Fieldbus Input/Output Modules series. The unit functions as a hub expansion module that extends an existing X20 node with an optical network branch. When installed on the right side of a CPU or bus coupler, it receives fieldbus traffic from a remote fiber segment and passes the data to the internal backplane. This arrangement supports deterministic updates for distributed sensors and actuators without requiring additional gateway hardware. Its slice-style construction allows the module to be incorporated into an X20 station without creating a separate network enclosure.
The physical network connection uses one fiber-optic receptacle designed for single-mode glass, providing a low-loss communication path over long plant distances. An integrated hub core processes the optical connection, so the installation does not require a separate repeater card. The single connection point keeps fiber routing straightforward and limits the number of enclosure openings needed for the cable. The optical channel can operate at elevations of up to 2000 m, supporting installations in high-altitude industrial facilities. The design also maintains fiber alignment during vibration, which helps preserve communication stability in operating machinery. Because condensation can interfere with optical electronics, the module must be used where moisture does not condense on its internal components.
When mounted horizontally, the module operates within a temperature range of -25 °C to 60 °C. This range supports startup in cold areas as well as continuous use in warm control cabinets without temperature-related derating. The permitted humidity reaches 95% RH under non-condensing conditions, accommodating humid industrial locations while protecting the optical electronics from collected moisture. Power and status lines are supplied through the X20 backplane, so the module does not require a separate external feeder. Its position beside the CPU or bus coupler provides direct access to internal station communication and power connections. The compact arrangement also leaves adjacent module positions available for other input, output, or communication functions within the same X20 station.
