Product Description:

The X20DS4387 digital I/O slice is produced by B&R Automation for the X20 Fieldbus Input Output Modules series. It occupies one terminal position on an X20 backplane and serves as an interface between the controller and connected field devices. In addition to conventional on-off sensing, the part provides four IO-Link ports so smart sensors can be parameterized and diagnosed from the PLC without extra gateway hardware, streamlining installation in distributed machine architectures.

Power consumption is minimal on the system rail: bus communication draws only 0.01 W, while the interface that supplies the IO-Link transceivers can require up to 9 W. Internally, the module dissipates a further 1.6 W to run its logic circuits. Current planning is simple because the slice is rated for a total backplane load of 0.4 A, and each channel provides galvanic isolation of 500 Veff toward the logic side. A short-circuit on an output results in no more than a 1 VDC voltage drop, so downstream equipment remains within tolerance. The unit withstands loop resistances up to 6 Ω and still operates properly, which facilitates compact wiring to actuators.

The output stage sources up to 0.2 A per port, and the cumulative device draw is limited to 0.3 A to prevent thermal stress on the power backbone. Signal integrity is maintained by a hardware input filter that settles within 100 ns, so fast edges are accurately captured even when field cables reach the permitted maximum of 20 m. For capacitive terminations, line characteristics are limited to 3 nF of distributed capacitance and 47 nF of connection capacity, and resistive loads must not exceed 100 Ω. The module carries the enclosure rating IP20, meaning it is finger-safe but requires mounting inside a cabinet with controlled environmental conditions.
