Product Description:

The X20DS1828 module is an incremental encoder interface produced by B&R Automation within the X20 Fieldbus Input Output Modules series. As a fieldbus-connected I/O device, it receives encoder feedback and forwards position data to the controller, allowing precise axis monitoring in distributed automation architectures. The module is designed for installation in an X20 rack and communicates over the system backplane without additional wiring. It also provides regulated power to the attached sensor while enforcing electrical isolation between the bus and signal circuitry.

An angular resolution of 13-bit lets the module discern 8192 discrete positions per revolution, supporting fine incremental measurements. Power drawn from the X20 backplane is minimal; fieldbus logic needs only 0.01 W, while the signal side consumes 1.3 W for internal I/O processing and encoder supply. Quadrature or RS485-based encoder signals are accepted up to 200 kHz, and the differential driver must deliver 1 VSS across the pair. The integrated sensor supply outputs 11 V at up to 150 mA, eliminating an external power source for most encoders. One Hiperface interface is provided for absolute position feedback, and data transfer follows the EIA RS485 standard, so shielded signal lines are required to maintain noise immunity.

Signal integrity across distributed machinery is preserved by the allowable common-mode window of ±10 V, which helps the receiver reject ground offsets between distant nodes. For RS485 links, the driver amplitude is referenced to a 5 VDC level, and a board-mounted 120 Ohm terminating resistor can be engaged to match line impedance and minimize reflections. The housing carries a protection rating of IP20, indicating finger-safe openings but no liquid sealing, so installation must remain inside a control cabinet.
