The X20DS1319 module is a high-speed digital counter and motion interface produced by B&R Automation within the X20 Fieldbus Input Output Modules series. It mounts directly on an X20 system backplane and links to the PLC over the real-time fieldbus. The device collects incremental encoder edges, index markers, and general-purpose switch states so the controller can supervise position, rate, and part-counting duties in automated assembly lines, packaging machines, and process skids. Dedicated onboard logic minimizes bus traffic while providing deterministic results for motion-related tasks. That arrangement lets the controller react to fast machine events without depending on slower software polling cycles.
Four digital lines operate at 24 VDC, and they can be configured as 4 I/O channels or assigned exclusively to counting functions depending on application needs. Internally, the module supports AB and Up/Down counter modes, permitting quadrature decoding for bidirectional movement tracking or simple accumulation for production totals. Two independent hardware sections supply 2 event counters, allowing simultaneous length measurement and piece tallying without added software context switching. A dedicated timing core provides 1 motion generator that issues phase-aligned pulses for reference runs or latch outputs. Remaining edges captured by the unused channel bandwidth are time-stamped locally, keeping latency low even during rapid encoder bursts. This separation helps the module handle multiple signal-processing tasks at the same time on fast-moving equipment.
Complementing the incremental channels, the unit exposes 1 SSI encoder channel for absolute position capture on linear scales or rotary transducers. Its flexible architecture groups the inputs into 1 universal counter pair, and that block can emit up to 2 max reference pulses each cycle to realign drives after cold starts. Edge and value time stamps are distributed with network precision thanks to NetTime support. With four input channels still available for sensors or homing triggers, the module maintains deterministic counting and synchronized motion feedback across the machine. This layout allows absolute encoder feedback and discrete machine signals to be handled together without requiring a separate interface module.
