The X20DO4321 digital output module belongs to the X20 Fieldbus Input Output Modules series from B&R Automation. Mounted on the system backplane, it acts as an interface between the fieldbus and DC loads, translating logic commands into power switching for machine actuators. By offering individually protected channels, the module helps expand I/O capacity in compact machine controllers without adding standalone relay boards.
It is designed for a nominal bus voltage of 24 VDC, and each channel can deliver up to 0.5 A while the module is limited to a total nominal current of 2 A. Four FET current-sinking transistor outputs are provided, giving a total of 4 outputs that share a common positive line through 3-wire connections. The sink architecture has an on-state resistance of 120 mΩ, which helps limit conduction losses, and an off-state leakage current of 75 µA, which helps prevent unintended coil energization. Output circuits are electrically isolated from the logic side by 500 Veff of reinforced insulation. Control electronics draw 0.16 W from the internal bus, while the local I/O section consumes 0.49 W, and an external actuator supply of 0.5 A is routed through the power feed to support the switched load. The overall actuator dissipation of the switching elements is stated separately so thermal loading can be checked.
For cabinet integration, the enclosure carries an IP20 protection rating, so it must be installed inside a control panel or a similarly shielded space. The switching devices generate +0.12 W of heat under rated conditions, a value that can be included in cabinet cooling calculations along with the other power figures. Diagnostic logic applies a 10 ms filter before flagging open-load, short-circuit, or overtemperature events, forwarding these messages to the controller without false positives.
