The X20DO2322/PL3 digital output module belongs to the X20 Fieldbus Input Output Modules series from B&R Automation. Designed for decentralized I/O stations, the unit snaps onto the X20 backplane and converts fieldbus commands into switched DC outputs for external devices. By supplying power to actuators, it lets a PLC operate indicators, contactors, and valves without added relay interfaces, which can reduce panel wiring and free space for other components. This arrangement is useful when I/O is mounted close to the machine section it serves, because shorter cable runs help keep installation layouts orderly. The compact housing also matches neighboring X20 cards, keeping mechanical depth and height consistent across the row.
Inside the module, 2 independent channels provide positive switching of DC loads. Each channel can supply up to 0.5 A at a rated output of 24 VDC, allowing small field devices to be driven directly when their electrical demand remains within the module limit. The output circuit uses a source configuration, so the card delivers the positive potential while the load returns to the system common. This arrangement suits devices that expect a switched positive feed rather than a sinking output path. Operation remains possible down to an ambient temperature of -25 °C, which supports installation in cold storage areas or other unheated environments.
Thermal limits depend on mounting position. When the module is installed horizontally, it can operate up to 60 °C, while vertical mounting lowers the upper limit to 50 °C because natural airflow across the housing is reduced. The permitted installation altitude reaches 2000 m above sea level, and higher elevations require derating to account for thinner air and reduced cooling effectiveness. Ambient humidity may reach 95% relative humidity if condensation is avoided, which suits facilities where moisture levels are high but the enclosure remains non-condensing. Condensation must be avoided to protect the output electronics and field connections.
