Product Description:
The X20DC4395 is a plug-in module produced by B & R Automation for the X20 Fieldbus Input Output Modules series. It acts as a counting and timing interface that lets a machine controller capture fast edge changes from incremental or absolute encoders, tally production events, and generate pulse-width signals for motion or process tasks in automated equipment. This allows the control system to handle fast signal evaluation directly within the I/O station instead of relying on slower general-purpose processing.
This module is identified as a Digital Counter Module, so the onboard logic is optimized for high-speed pulse evaluation rather than analog conversion. It can accept feedback from 4 AB incremental encoders, letting a PLC determine position and speed on up to four axes that use quadrature signals. Two additional inputs are reserved for 2 ABR incremental encoders, and the index track supports precise zero referencing at every revolution. All encoder lines are read with a 24 V signal level, matching the standard sensor supply used in most industrial cabinets. For process totals or batch sizes, the board supplies 8 event counters, and each one can accumulate discrete triggers from proximity switches or photo eyes without taxing the main CPU.
The module can drive actuators or test devices through 4 PWM outputs, where duty cycle is modulated directly in hardware to regulate valves, LEDs, or small motors. It also accepts data from 2 SSI absolute encoders, giving single-turn or multi-turn position values over a synchronous serial link when incremental measurement is not sufficient. Time-stamping of every captured edge is supported by local time measurement, so motion events remain deterministic even if network jitter is present. A controller can therefore use one X20 slot for encoder capture, event counting, and hardware-modulated outputs.
