Product Description:
The X20DC2398 module is produced by B&R Automation and belongs to the X20 Fieldbus Input Output Modules series. As a digital counter module, it accepts absolute encoder inputs and converts them into deterministic position counts for industrial controllers. The slice installs on the X20 backplane, shares fieldbus power, and provides push-in terminals for quick sensor wiring, allowing compact deployment on machine frames with minimal panel space. This arrangement makes the module suitable for compact control cabinets and distributed machine sections where encoder feedback must remain consistent during continuous operation.
Two independent counting channels enable simultaneous processing of quadrature or pulse signals, and each channel updates at a 125 kbit/s transfer rate. Internally, the module packages incoming values into a 32-bit register so the application CPU can handle large count ranges without rollover management. Communication to the controller uses the SSI protocol, ensuring synchronized data latching across the X20 network. For sensor excitation, the unit sources a stabilized 24 V encoder supply that is protected against short-circuit conditions. The design keeps signal crosstalk low by dedicating separate shielded paths to every channel, and the 2 channel layout supports dual-axis counting in one module.
When installed horizontally, the module operates safely between -25 °C and 60 °C, allowing deployment in refrigerated conveyors and heated process zones without derating. Conformal coating and sealed construction let the electronics withstand up to 95% RH non-condensing humidity, so cabinet climate control can be reduced in damp areas. Altitude approval to 2000 m supports installation in most plant elevations without special cooling measures. Push-in terminals accept twin ferrules up to 2 × 0.75 mm², and the absolute signal format eliminates the need for homing after power cycles.
