The X20DC2396 module from B&R Automation belongs to the X20 Fieldbus Input Output Modules series. Designed for use in distributed control systems, the unit captures incremental encoder feedback and forwards the counted values to the PLC in real time. By housing the counter logic in the I/O rack, it unloads the central CPU and helps coordinate position-dependent tasks such as registration marks, cut-to-length processing, or conveyor synchronization. This arrangement supports modular machine layouts where signal distances and latency must be minimized.
The module accepts 2 separate encoder inputs, and the hardware resolves each channel’s quadrature signals at an evaluation factor of 4x, meaning four count edges are recorded per line cycle. Its front terminals use the ABR Incremental interface, so standard A, B, and reference-mark signals can be wired without level converters. Counting reliability is maintained up to a maximum input frequency of 100 kHz, allowing accurate measurement even on high-speed spindles or linear motors. All sensor lines are referenced to a 24 V signal level, which simplifies power distribution with other 24-volt field devices. Preprocessed position data is returned through the X20 backplane bus so the PLC can use current count values for synchronized machine functions.
The module is rated for continuous duty at elevations up to 2000 m without derating. When installed horizontally in a cabinet, it tolerates ambient temperatures up to 60 °C; in a vertical orientation the limit is 50 °C, while safe cold-start operation extends down to -25 °C. A conformal-coated circuit board and sealed housing allow exposure to 95% non-condensing relative humidity, which helps reduce moisture-related failures. The module can be used in cabinets that experience seasonal temperature and humidity changes, provided condensation does not form.
