B & R Automation's X20DC11A6 is part of the X20 Fieldbus Input Output Modules series. Classified as a digital counter module, it interfaces fast incremental encoders with the distributed I/O backbone. The device captures pulse trains and delivers real-time count data to the controller so that position, speed, or flow can be evaluated directly inside the automation program. Its compact form factor allows placement close to sensors, minimizing cable lengths and improving signal integrity. This helps the controller react to changing machine conditions with minimal delay.
The hardware accepts a 1-channel quadrature input that is compatible with an A/B/R incremental encoder. With 4x evaluation, the module counts every rising and falling edge on both A and B tracks, which increases the usable resolution available to the PLC. Because every edge is evaluated, small mechanical movements can be measured more precisely from the same encoder hardware. Counting remains reliable at line rates up to 5 MHz, permitting direct feedback from high-speed spindles or measuring wheels. Internal filtering is matched to a 5 V TTL signal level, so differential drivers or external level shifters are not required. The single-channel design also leaves bus bandwidth free for other time-critical modules. A built-in latch register captures position instantly at trigger events.
Complementary features extend the basic counter so that timing and diagnostic data can be aligned with other distributed nodes. The integrated Nettime function tags each captured edge with a common microsecond-accurate timestamp, enabling coordinated motion sequences without external synchronizers. That shared time base supports comparisons between encoder events and signals from other synchronized nodes. Continuous encoder monitoring supervises phase sequence and missing pulses and raises a diagnostic flag if cable damage is detected. The module uses a single-slot profile and can be mapped alongside analog, safety, or communication slices in the same station.
