Product Description:
The X20DC1198-C01 module is produced by B&R Automation for the X20 Fieldbus Input Output Modules series. It occupies one slot in an X20 slice and serves as a combined counter and SSI absolute encoder interface, allowing a controller to register high-resolution position data and discrete events on the same node. By transferring these time-critical signals over the backplane bus, the unit helps a machine controller synchronize motion axes and tally process counts without placing additional load on remote I/O bandwidth.
The encoder supply delivers 300 mA at 5 V so the connected sensor can be powered directly from the slice, while bus-side electronics draw only 0.01 W, keeping the stack’s total dissipation low. Captured position or pulse information is stored in a 32-bit hardware counter, giving adequate range for long travel distances or high-speed shaft revolutions before rollover. The module has 2 fast digital inputs, allowing the same card to record a marker pulse or direction signal alongside the main count channel. Data moves across the X20 backplane at up to 1 Mbit/s, matching the timing requirements of motion loops that depend on rapid, deterministic updates.
The input stage is referenced to the field supply, which is specified at a nominal 24 VDC. Functional insulation between the encoder lines and the internal bus is rated for 500 Veff, preventing ground shifts from propagating into the controller. A hardware filter of ≤ 2 µs removes contact bounce without masking fast edges, and an input resistance of 7.19 kΩ limits current draw from external sensors. Type 1 sink characteristics, a 3-wire connection scheme, and an SSI interface compatible with a single absolute channel complete the signal arrangement so that field wiring and controller configuration remain consistent across multiple installations.
