Product Description:

B&R Automation manufactures the X20DC1198 counter module as part of its X20 Fieldbus Input Output Modules series. This unit is a fieldbus-connected incremental encoder interface intended for precise counting and position feedback tasks in industrial automation assemblies such as packaging axes, conveying lines, and motion test benches. By translating encoder pulses into numerical values that the PLC can process, the module supports closed-loop speed supervision and product tracking functions.

The module accepts a nominal backplane supply of 24 VDC and forwards power to two encoder ports, with one delivering up to 300 mA at the same voltage and the other providing 5 VDC ±5% for TTL sensors. Both counting channels operate with a 5 V symmetrical input level and meet EN 61131-2 Type 1 compliance; the signal path is filtered by a hardware stage that settles within ≤2 µs, limiting contact bounce. Each channel is processed by a 32-bit counter, giving ample range for high-resolution linear or rotary transducers. The digital front end uses an input circuit wired in a sink configuration, and the two inputs satisfy Type 1 (EN 61131-2) electrical thresholds.

On the system side, the X20DC1198 draws only 0.01 W from the X20 bus, while its internal electronics require 1.5 W from the local I/O supply, keeping cabinet heat generation minimal. Position data are transferred across the fieldbus at up to 1 Mbit/s, with selectable Gray or Binary coding to match the connected encoder format. Channel-to-bus and encoder-to-bus circuits are isolated by 500 Veff, improving noise immunity and protecting the controller from ground loops. The module is housed in an IP20 enclosure that is suitable for mounting inside a protected control cabinet and provides two digital inputs for auxiliary functions such as zero reference or direction selection.
