Product Description:
The X20DC1196 is a dedicated counter input module produced by B&R Automation within the X20 Fieldbus Input Output Modules series. Designed for machine platforms that require fast position feedback, the unit accepts incremental encoder signals and forwards processed count values across the X20 backplane to the central controller. Its direct interface for motion axes removes the need for separate standalone counters and supports synchronized positioning routines in industrial automation cells. The module processes encoder data locally before transmitting the resulting count values, reducing the amount of signal processing required by the central controller.
The module handles a maximum input frequency of 600 kHz, allowing it to capture high-resolution pulse streams from fast rotary or linear encoders without missing edges. The incoming differential lines use a reference level of 5 V, matching typical TTL sensor outputs. The hardware evaluates every edge on both channels with a 4× evaluation factor, providing quadruple count density for finer position measurement. Compatible sensors must provide an ABR incremental signal format. One isolated counter group supports 1 encoder through the front terminals. The housing has an IP20 protection rating, which prevents accidental finger contact with internal components while permitting natural convection cooling. This arrangement allows the module to receive the encoder channels and reference pulse through a compact connection point.
The electrical domain is classified in overvoltage category II, allowing the module to tolerate transients present on distribution wiring in light-industrial facilities without additional surge modules. Installation is permitted at elevations up to 2000 m above sea level. The module operates in ambient humidity levels reaching 95% RH without condensation. Mechanical resilience includes a shock tolerance of 15 g and a continuous vibration limit of 1 g, allowing installation on machinery exposed to regular movement and vibration. These operating limits help maintain stable pulse acquisition when the host equipment is exposed to altitude changes, elevated humidity, or machine-induced mechanical stress.
