Product Description:
The X20DC1178 is a fieldbus input/output module produced by B&R Automation within the X20 Fieldbus Input Output Modules series. It is intended to sit on an X20 backplane and forward absolute-position data from remote axes to the central controller, giving deterministic motion feedback inside distributed industrial automation cells. The unit’s compact housing simplifies dense cabinet layouts, while its single encoder interface focuses resources on high-accuracy position acquisition rather than broad multichannel sampling. Because it is dedicated to absolute encoder feedback, it is well suited to motion applications that depend on consistent position values and tightly coordinated control across a distributed system.
Incoming position words are handled with a 32-bit data width, which helps preserve full encoder resolution during transfer to the controller. The port supplies 5 V power to the sensor, and encoder monitoring helps detect supply or cable faults during operation. A maximum throughput of 1 Mbit/s supports rapid feedback updates, while the NetTime function time-stamps telegrams so multiple modules can stay synchronized. The physical interface accepts SSI absolute encoders, and the IP20 enclosure provides finger protection for panel mounting. Electrical transients are limited by the device’s Overvoltage Category II rating, and continuous machine vibration up to 1 g is tolerated during normal plant operation.
The module provides 1 measurement channel, so position data is acquired without internal multiplexing. The electronics withstand mechanical shock levels of 15 g, allowing the unit to handle handling and transport loads that can occur around installation. Reliable service is specified up to 95 % relative humidity in non-condensing atmospheres, and altitude capability extends to 2000 m above sea level without derating. These operating limits make the module suitable for factory and process environments where stable SSI encoder communication is required over long operating periods.
