The X20DC1176 is an encoder input module manufactured by B&R Automation as part of the X20 Fieldbus Input Output Modules series. Mounted on the X20 backplane, it routes incremental encoder signals into the fieldbus so that a controller can track position and velocity in real time. This compact module removes the need for external counter hardware, streamlining wiring and conserving cabinet space in distributed industrial automation architectures. It is intended for applications that need encoder feedback collected directly at the I/O level.
The housing carries a protection rating of IP20, limiting installation to enclosed panels where basic touch protection is sufficient. Its counter accepts quadrature streams at up to 600 kHz, allowing high-speed motion axes to be sampled without losing edges. The required signal format is ABR Incremental. A, B, and reference channels are decoded with a programmable evaluation factor of 4x, so each electrical cycle yields four position increments for finer resolution. The encoder supply pin provides 5 V, removing the need for an external power rail, and encoder monitoring reports cable breaks or supply faults to the PLC. A built-in Nettime function timestamps every captured edge for network-wide synchronization when several axes must share a common time base.
The device processes exactly 1 incremental channel group, which simplifies configuration when only one feedback device is connected on a node. It withstands continuous mechanical stress levels of 15 g shock and 1 g vibration, helping it maintain stable operation on moving machines or mobile equipment. Its electrical design complies with Overvoltage Category II, so the input circuitry is intended for installations downstream of the facility distribution transformer. This arrangement supports compact machine sections where local encoder acquisition is preferred over a separate counter module.
