B & R Automation manufactures the X20DC1073 module for the X20 Fieldbus Input Output Modules series. This compact unit serves as a SinCos encoder interface that plugs onto an X20 backplane and transfers analog position data into the fieldbus cycle. By providing conditioned differential signals to the controller, the module allows machine builders to achieve high-resolution angular tracking, synchronize axes, and execute precise motion tasks within packaging lines, assembly cells, and other automated equipment.
The interface samples the incoming encoder signal with 13-bit resolution, giving 8192 discrete positions per revolution. It draws just 0.01 W from the X20 system bus, while its separate internal I/O rail requires 1.3 W for the analog front end. The housing is rated IP20, which is suitable for cabinet mounting. The SinCos channels are accepted as a differential pair with an amplitude of 1 VSS, and they are carried over shielded lines with symmetrical differential transmission. A maximum signal frequency of 400 kHz permits high-speed feedback without missed counts. Encoder monitoring is built in to detect cable breaks, and the sensor connects through one SinCos input.
The encoder supply rail provides 5 V at up to 300 mA and maintains at least 4.86 V on the output terminals, ensuring adequate headroom for low-impedance sensors. With a permissible common-mode window of ±10 V, the analog receivers tolerate ground shifts between the machine frame and the encoder housing. Cable runs can reach 20 m when shielded twisted pairs are used, and signal integrity at that distance is aided by the onboard termination of 120 Ω, which matches line impedance. The common-mode tolerance and matched line termination help preserve stable feedback on long cable runs in electrically noisy cabinets.
