The X20cSL8100 safety logic controller from B&R Automation is part of the X20 Fieldbus Input Output Modules series. Intended for distributed machine safety, the unit executes certified logic and exchanges status bits over a POWERLINK network while storing its program on a removable memory carrier. In an automation cell, it filters, evaluates, and forwards safe I/O locally, which helps reduce reaction times and eases the processing load on the main PLC. Because the safety logic is processed in the station itself, local emergency stops, interlocks, and guard signals can be handled close to the machine instead of routing every decision back to a central controller.
The module is rated IP20, so the housing helps prevent accidental contact and requires installation inside a control cabinet. During horizontal mounting, it operates from -25 to 60 °C, while vertical mounting reduces the upper temperature limit because natural convection is less effective in that position. The electronics remain functional in ambient air with relative humidity of up to 100%, condensing, which allows short-term moisture exposure inside enclosed equipment after washdown. Mechanical endurance is verified for shocks up to 15 g and continuous vibration of 1 g, supporting use on presses, gantries, or other equipment with regular motion. The assembly is also rated for Overvoltage Category II, which matches circuits supplied through a local transformer.
An exchangeable SafeKEY plugs into the front panel and stores the user program and safety parameters on a removable carrier. Network traffic passes through an integrated 2-port hub, allowing the device to sit within a line topology without a separate switch. The Powerlink interface registers the station as a controlled node, so cyclic data remains synchronized with the segment master during operation. All safety telegrams are wrapped in openSAFETY, which preserves end-to-end data integrity independently of the transport layer. A dedicated power supply module ships with the unit to provide internal 24 V logic power and feed the two Ethernet ports.
