The X20CS1030-C01 is a communication coupler belonging to the X20 Fieldbus Input Output Modules series from B & R Automation. Installed on the X20 backplane, the module links decentralized I/O nodes to higher-level controllers by converting serial data to the internal system bus. In an automation line, it acts as the gateway that propagates process signals, power status, and diagnostic information between individual I/O slices and the main PLC. This arrangement lets the controller exchange data with nearby modules while keeping signal handling concentrated at the I/O station instead of sending each signal back to the main cabinet.
The coupler communicates over a single serial channel that supports the differential standards RS-422/485, giving it noise-immune, multi-drop cabling capability on shielded twisted pairs. Internal electronics are supplied from the rack via a regulated 24 VDC system voltage, so no separate power feed is required. The headpiece exposes 1 field port, and its board set provides slots for 3 subordinate X20 submodules that can be mixed to suit the required digital or analog I/O mix. When the assembly is mounted in a horizontal orientation, ambient air around the housing may reach up to 60 °C without derating, which supports cabinets positioned near heat-generating machinery.
Operating limits also cover installation altitude and ambient temperature. Continuous operation is permitted up to 2000 m above sea level, a height that accommodates most production floors without special cooling measures. If the carrier rail is mounted vertically, the permissible peak ambient drops to 50 °C because convection paths are shorter along the board stack. Startup in unheated areas remains possible down to -25 °C, and that same minimum applies regardless of orientation. Mounting direction should be considered when the module is placed near power supplies or motion hardware that raises cabinet temperature.
