Product Description:

The X20CS1020 is a communication module manufactured by B&R Automation for the X20 Fieldbus Input/Output Modules series. Installed beside the system bus coupler, it adds a serial port so that a machine controller can exchange point-to-point data with sensors, drives, or operator interfaces. Within an automated cell, it acts as the physical bridge between older serial hardware and the real-time X20 backplane. This lets existing serial devices remain in service while the rest of the station uses the X20 I/O platform.

Serial performance centers on the single 1x RS232 interface, which can stream data up to 115.2 kbit/s and uses a 1 kB FIFO so that burst transfers do not overrun the controller task. Hardware flow-control lines, RTS and CTS, are available for devices that require handshake pacing. A 16C550-compatible UART handles character framing, parity generation, and interrupt signaling. The module draws only 0.01 W from the system bus because all transmitter drivers are supplied from the I/O side, helping keep total rail current low. Bus isolation keeps the serial common electrically separated from the backplane, and status LEDs together with software flags report run and error conditions for quick diagnostics.

On the field side, the port electronics require 1.44 W, sourced from the neighboring I/O supply that is not isolated from the channel. Wiring is done through a 12-pin terminal block, and the slim 12.5 mm module pitch allows dense packing without blocking airflow. The narrow housing also leaves room for adjacent I/O modules in compact control cabinets. The IP20 protection class limits use to cabinets but permits either horizontal or vertical mounting orientations supported by the housing. Module-level diagnostics remain accessible regardless of orientation, and the isolation concept ensures that disturbances entering through the serial connector cannot propagate onto the system bus while still sharing the local 24 V distribution.
