B&R Automation manufactures the X20CP3687X central processing module for the X20 Fieldbus Input Output Modules series. The device serves as the primary controller that executes PLC logic and coordinates remote I/O nodes. It allows machine builders to combine deterministic control, data handling, and fieldbus communication in a compact rail-mounted form factor.
Processing resources are anchored by an Intel Atom CPU running at 1.6 GHz. Real-time code executes in 2 GB DDR4 RAM, while the operating system and user projects are stored in nonvolatile 2 GB flash memory. A fast 1 MB SRAM section retains critical variables through power cycles without wear on solid-state media, and additional program space is available on a removable CompactFlash card used as application memory. Three interface slots accommodate expansion modules such as fieldbus couplers or motion cards. The controller draws 7 W from the backplane bus and ships with a dedicated power-supply module, so no external DC source is needed for its core electronics.
Network and I/O connectivity are delivered through a 1x 10/100/1000BASE-T Ethernet port for standard TCP/IP traffic, a dedicated Powerlink port for cyclic real-time messaging, and a 1x RS232 service channel for legacy equipment or console access. Two USB ports allow removable drives or interface adapters to be connected when needed. The internal power distributor can source up to 240 W for downstream X20 modules, eliminating separate feeders for digital and analog slices. One X2X+ backplane connection is present, allowing deterministic in-rack expansion without additional wiring. With three available interface slots, the controller can be adapted for broader protocol coverage while the integrated bus supply powers distributed I/O rails directly from the module.
