The X20CP3686X CPU module is manufactured by B&R Automation for use in the X20 Fieldbus Input/Output Modules series. Installed on the backplane of an X20 system, the unit serves as the central processor that coordinates distributed I/O slices, motion axes, and network communication within a machine controller. By combining computing, communication, and fieldbus interfaces in a single compact module, it simplifies modular configurations in which deterministic control tasks must be executed close to sensors and actuators. This arrangement also reduces the number of separate components required to manage local automation functions.
The controller relies on an Atom processor running at 1.3 GHz to execute real-time system software and user logic. Working memory consists of 1 GB of DDR4 RAM, supporting consistent data exchange with the surrounding I/O modules. Program and system files are stored in 2 GB of onboard flash memory, while additional data can be archived on a CompactFlash card inserted into the removable memory bay. A built-in 10/100/1000BASE-T Ethernet interface links the CPU to higher-level networks for PLC programming, OPC UA traffic, and remote diagnostics. Peripheral connectivity is provided through two USB ports, which can accommodate service devices or human-machine interfaces. The module also supports X2X+, allowing high-speed expansion nodes to be connected without using additional interface slots.
The module provides one RS-232 port for legacy serial devices such as barcode readers and simple drives. It also has one POWERLINK port for deterministic real-time Ethernet communication with downstream equipment. Up to three interface module slots accommodate local add-ons, including watchdog modules and additional bus masters. The module can forward an internal I/O supply of up to 240 W to adjacent components. Its bus power consumption is 0.2 W, while the bus supply limit is 7 W and the X2X link uses an additional 0.6 W. A dedicated power supply module is included, allowing the CPU to be energized independently of remote racks. This power arrangement supports installations in which the processor and its local I/O must remain electrically separate from distributed sections of the control system.
