The X20CP3685 central processing unit is supplied by B&R Automation within the X20 Fieldbus Input Output Modules series. As the primary controller of an X20 node, the module executes application code, supervises distributed real-time tasks, and transfers data between the local backplane and higher-level networks. It mounts directly on the X20 rail beside power and communication modules, where it synchronizes field devices, consolidates diagnostic information, and issues deterministic commands. These capabilities allow the controller to coordinate drives, sensors, and safety components in industrial automation systems.
An embedded Atom 0.8 GHz processor provides deterministic execution for motion, logic, and communication tasks. Program variables and buffers reside in 512 MB DDR4 of main RAM, while system software and user projects are stored in a soldered flash array with a capacity of 1 GB. A removable CompactFlash card adds portable backup and update capability. High-speed plant networking is handled through one TSN 10/100/1000BASE-T port that supports time-sensitive traffic shaping. The controller supports 3 interface slots for backplane communication channels. These slots accept option modules such as CAN, PROFIBUS, or additional Powerlink interfaces, allowing the node to support the communication requirements of a particular machine. An onboard SRAM cache with a capacity of 1 MB secures retentive variables without requiring battery maintenance.
Base power consumption is 6.9 W, which limits the controller’s load on cabinet power supplies. The system draws an additional 7 W from the internal bus to energize attached modules. The controller also allocates 0.6 W to each installed interface module and 1.42 W through the X2X Link supply when remote terminals are connected. The front panel provides 2 USB host interfaces, each of which can supply up to 500 mA for service tools or compatible adapters. Downstream sensors can receive power from the shared backplane, which provides an aggregate 240 W internal I/O supply. This shared power arrangement reduces the amount of separate wiring required for extensive modular installations.
