The X20CP3586 central processing unit is manufactured by B&R Automation for the X20 Fieldbus Input/Output Modules series. Installed on an X20 backplane, this controller executes PLC code, manages deterministic fieldbus traffic, and supplies supervisory logic for distributed I/O stations. It integrates a POWERLINK interface for real-time Ethernet exchange with motion drives and a dedicated X2X link for local module coupling, allowing machine builders to consolidate control tasks and network functions in a single compact module. The CPU also reserves onboard memory areas for user variables, making it suitable for mid-range machinery.
At its core, an Atom E680T processor running at 1.6 GHz handles the control logic. This chip is paired with 512 MB DDR2 SDRAM for program execution and a 512 kB second-level cache that shortens memory access during branch-intensive routines. Deterministic data exchange with remote drives occurs through the integrated POWERLINK port, which sustains 100 Mbit/s full-duplex traffic, while a single CompactFlash slot provides removable storage for system data or recipe files. Three modular interface slots permit the addition of specialty communication adapters without enlarging the controller footprint.
Control tasks can be scheduled at a minimum cycle time of 100 µs, and average single-instruction execution is 0.0027 µs, giving the module enough bandwidth for motion interpolation. During operation, it draws a base load of 9.7 W from the system rail and may request up to 1.5 A during startup. The backplane delivers 7 W of X2X link output power for downstream modules, so auxiliary wiring is minimized. Nonvolatile requirements are covered by 1 MB of remanent variable space, while 1 MB of battery-free SRAM is reserved for user data. A serial port supports point-to-point diagnostics over RS-232 at 115.2 kbit/s for cable runs up to 900 m, providing a legacy service channel beside the primary Ethernet link.
