The X20CP3584 is a central processing unit module produced by B&R Automation within the X20 Fieldbus Input Output Modules series. As a CPU carrier, it handles real-time control tasks and manages distributed X2X bus nodes in automated machinery lines. It uses an ATOM E620T processor and stores application code on removable CompactFlash memory, allowing quick replacement in the field. By combining processing power, fieldbus interfaces, and onboard memory, the unit serves as a compact controller for modular I/O stations.
The ATOM E620T runs at 0.6 GHz, providing adequate performance for deterministic code execution with a minimum task cycle of 400 µs. Program variables and buffers are stored in 256 MB DDR2-SDRAM, which helps the controller handle multiple logical tasks without unnecessary delays. Power consumption is 8.6 W when the module is used without peripheral USB devices or interface cards, which helps with enclosure heat calculations. For network communication, the CPU includes an integrated 10/100/1000BASE-T Ethernet port for links to supervisory systems, and the board also has a CompactFlash socket, three internal interface slots for optional fieldbus expanders, and 1 MB of battery-backed SRAM for service data.
Fieldbus traffic to decentralized I/O is handled through a dedicated POWERLINK (V1/V2) channel, while legacy serial peripherals can still connect through the onboard RS-232 port. During operation, the controller draws a maximum of 1.5 A from the backplane supply and accepts a voltage range of 24 VDC (-15%/+20%), which helps protect the electronics against moderate line variation. Two front-mounted USB sockets simplify program loading or data logging to flash drives. The X2X bus drivers can supply 7 W to downstream modules, so additional power couplers are often unnecessary, and support for extra fieldbus cards allows the CPU to adapt to changing machine requirements without altering the enclosure size.
