B & R Automation’s X20CP3486 CPU module belongs to the X20 Fieldbus Input Output Modules series. Intended for central control duties, it executes IEC 61131-3 logic, coordinates distributed slices on the X2X backplane, and forwards field data to supervisory networks. The unit integrates processor, memory, and power distribution inside a 24 mm-wide housing, allowing deterministic control capability to be embedded directly in the I/O row. It can replace stand-alone PLCs in packaging, assembly, and material-handling cells where cabinet space is limited.
B & R equips the module with a Celeron 650 processor backed by two cache levels: 2 × 16 kB L1 and 256 kB L2. Program execution is supported by 64 MB SDRAM, while 1 MB of SRAM is reserved for ultra-fast user variables. Each machine instruction completes in 0.0034 µs, and the real-time scheduler closes its fastest task every 200 µs. For parameter retention, the controller maintains 256 kB of remanent variables even after a power loss. Three interface slots accept fieldbus or motion cards, and a CompactFlash slot provides removable mass storage. An on-board X2X driver can source 7 W to adjacent modules, eliminating separate feeders. Environmental protection is limited to the cabinet because the housing carries an IP20 rating.
Electrical parameters align the module with standard 24 V control cabinets. Its base power consumption is 13.5 W, and the X20 backplane distributes that demand without external cooling. Digital outputs fed through the integrated power jumper can switch loads at a nominal 24 VDC, while relay points tolerate a continuous 10 A load for actuators such as contactors or solenoid valves. For service diagnostics, the embedded serial port supports data transfers up to 115.2 kbit/s, allowing communication with legacy service devices.
