B & R Automation’s X20CP3486 CPU module belongs to the X20 Fieldbus Input Output Modules series. Intended for central control duties, it executes IEC 61131-3 logic, coordinates distributed slices on the X2X backplane, and forwards field data to supervisory networks. The unit integrates processor, memory, and power distribution inside a 24 mm-wide housing, allowing deterministic control capability to be embedded directly in the I/O row. It can replace stand-alone PLCs in packaging, assembly, and material-handling cells where cabinet space is limited.

B & R equips the module with a Celeron 650 processor backed by two cache levels: 2 × 16 kB L1 and 256 kB L2. Program execution is supported by 64 MB SDRAM, while 1 MB of SRAM is reserved for ultra-fast user variables. Each machine instruction completes in 0.0034 µs, and the real-time scheduler closes its fastest task every 200 µs. For parameter retention, the controller maintains 256 kB of remanent variables even after a power loss. Three interface slots accept fieldbus or motion cards, and a CompactFlash slot provides removable mass storage. An on-board X2X driver can source 7 W to adjacent modules, eliminating separate feeders. Environmental protection is limited to the cabinet because the housing carries an IP20 rating.
