The X20CP3485-1 is a programmable control unit in the X20 Fieldbus Input Output Modules series from B&R Automation. Installed at the left edge of an X20 rack, it serves as the central processor by interpreting application code, supervising cyclic data exchange, and forwarding deterministic timing signals to neighboring slices. By combining processor, memory, and fieldbus interfaces in a 24 V segment, the device supports compact machine control where modular expansion is required in packaging lines, material-handling cells, or general factory automation.
At its core, a Celeron 400 processor works with an instruction cycle of 0.0055 µs to complete logic steps at high speed. The controller carries 64 MB SDRAM for program execution and network buffering, complemented by a 256 kB L2 cache that reduces access latency for frequently used routines. Real-time scheduling is maintained by a 400 µs task class cycle, so motion groups and PID loops run with predictable timing. Overall power demand remains low, with consumption held to 10.5 W. A CompactFlash slot provides removable program storage, while 256 kB of remanent variables preserve machine counters through power loss. The unit also includes 1 MB of fast SRAM for data blocks, and three modular interface slots accept additional communication or encoder cards.
Field communication is handled through a 100BASE-T Powerlink port for microsecond-level synchronization, while the RS-232 channel supports diagnostics at 115.2 kbit/s. The module provides 24 VDC to its digital outputs, and each channel is rated for 10 A resistive loads. A USB service jack can supply 0.5 A to small peripherals, and the backplane delivers 7 W of X2X power to neighboring I/O modules and interface cards. This arrangement allows the CPU to manage local I/O traffic and attached expansion modules from a single rack position.
