The X20CP3484-1 is a CPU module produced by B&R Automation for the X20 Fieldbus Input Output Modules series. Within an automation rack, it supplies central processing, network coordination, and local bus timing for distributed I/O slices. Its purpose is to execute application code, maintain deterministic scan cycles, and forward real-time data to higher-level controllers without active cooling hardware because the design is fanless. A single CompactFlash slot allows removable mass storage, and three modular interface slots accept fieldbus or specialty communication cards to match plant-specific topologies.
The module is driven by a Celeron 266-compatible core buffered by an L1 cache of 2x 16 kB. Main program variables reside in 64 MB SDRAM, while time-critical data can be kept in 1 MB of battery-backed SRAM; an extra 64 kB segment is reserved for remanent variables that must survive power cycles. The shortest deterministic task cycle can be set to 800 µs, and individual machine instructions typically execute in only 0.007 µs, giving the controller ample margin for high-speed motion logic. Field devices are linked through POWERLINK at 100 Mbit/s, and three expansion slots keep copper or fiber transceivers close to the backplane. A maximum input current of 2.2 A must be available from the 24 V control supply to guarantee stable boot and worst-case computational loads.
Additional services are provided through an asynchronous serial channel that reaches 115.2 kbit/s for maintenance laptops, and through an X2X bus feed that delivers 7 W to remote slice electronics. Digital outputs source the plant standard of 24 VDC, eliminating level shifters when driving contactors or photoelectric sensors. The real-time clock logs events with a resolution of 1 s, ensuring traceability even during network outages.
