B&R Automation's X20CP1686X is a CPU module in the X20 Fieldbus Input Output Modules series. It serves as the primary controller for distributed I/O assemblies, executing IEC 61131-3 programs, coordinating network traffic, and supervising motion axes in industrial lines. The slim housing allows the processor to sit directly beside digital and analog slices, which helps minimize panel space and enables deterministic control of connected sensors and actuators.
Core performance is delivered by a processor running at 1.3 GHz and supported by DDR4 memory technology for low-latency data access. Nonvolatile storage includes CompactFlash application memory plus an onboard flash device of 2 GB for recipes, log files, and system data. The module draws only 7 W from the bus supply, preserving headroom for additional cards on the rail. Communication is handled through a single RJ45 interface that supports 10/100/1000BASE-T signaling and uses TSN time slicing so cyclic and acyclic traffic can share the same cable without jitter. One POWERLINK port, one RS-232 service port, and an X2X+ backplane link provide additional deterministic communication paths. A single interface-module slot is available for future fieldbus or motion cards, and the unit has one Ethernet port.
Downstream modules are energized by an internal I/O supply rated at 240 W, eliminating the need for external feeders even on large racks. Runtime variables and process buffers reside in 1 GB of system RAM, while fast retain data is held in 1 MB of SRAM to safeguard counters during brownouts. Two front-panel service receptacles are present, summarized as 2 USB ports, and they permit software updates or data export without opening the enclosure. This combination supports synchronized, multiaxis, and data-rich automation cells that require predictable response times in a compact installation.
